Marc was a talented county-level swimmer as a teenager, but at 17, his life took an unexpected turn when he lost his left leg to cancer. Determined to push his limits, he set himself a new goal—to be the best he could be. Just 18 months after completing chemotherapy, he was selected to represent Great Britain.

Over a remarkable 17-year career, Marc competed on the international stage as a Paralympic swimmer, winning 12 Paralympic medals across five Games, along with 21 medals from World and European Championships. He has held world records in the 200m, 400m, and 1500m Freestyle events, as well as in the 4x100m Freestyle relay. Since retiring from competitive swimming in 2004, he has become a familiar face in sports broadcasting, working with the BBC and Channel 4 at the Paralympic Games in Beijing, London, and Rio.

Beyond sport, Marc is a leadership expert and co-founder of Equiida, a leadership advisory business. As an executive coach and speaker, he works with organisations worldwide, helping leaders develop self-awareness, take responsibility, and build effective, inclusive teams.

Passionate about the power of sport and physical activity, Marc serves as Chair of the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA). As the professional development body for the UK’s sport and physical activity sector, CIMSPA is dedicated to raising standards, supporting professionals, and inspiring the nation to become more active.

Since retiring from international swimming, Marc has embraced new challenges, trekking in Nepal, Ecuador, and Peru (including the Inca Trail) and honing his mountaineering skills. His achievements include summiting the world’s highest volcano, Cotopaxi in Ecuador, as well as Mont Pelvoux in France and the 22,200ft Mera Peak in Nepal.

Sharing his tale of self-belief with a stroke of dry humour, he has enthused audiences from across the world and in every sector, using original BBC archive footage from Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 to enrich his delivery.

Alongside his work as a radio and TV commentator for the BBC, Marc is also an accomplished author. He has written three books, including Personal Best, which blends his inspirational life story with practical personal development insights. Beyond the Call, backed by research from New York University, explores how organisations can create environments that inspire exceptional effort and commitment.

With his infectious passion and a sharp business mindset, Weaving his inspirational story of coping with the unexpected, personal resilience, motivation and teamwork into the issues facing all organisations, Marc Woods’ life proves that focus and determination are a winning combination.
His engaging approach leaves delegates inspired to push their own limits and achieve their ultimate potential.
