Jason Robinson is a revered sports icon, celebrated for his mastery in both Rugby League and Rugby Union, and notably, as the first Black British man to captain the England Rugby Team.
Famed for his signature sidestep, speed, and ability to outmanoeuvre defenders, Jason’s rugby journey began at Wigan before he played for Bath, Sale Sharks, Fylde, the England National Team, and the British & Irish Lions. Over his distinguished career, he played 281 games, scoring an astounding 171 tries, and earned MBE and OBE honours. Since retiring, Jason founded JR Talks and JR Sports Stars, focusing on empowering underprivileged urban communities to achieve their life goals and boost their confidence.
Jason’s remarkable rugby career took off after being talent-scouted while playing for Hunslet Boys Club. At Wigan, he was instrumental in securing a Super League title, three Challenge Cups, three Regal Trophies, four Championships, and four Premiership titles. As captain of Sale Sharks, Jason led the team to third place in the league, a European Challenge Cup victory, a Heineken Cup quarter-final, and the 2005 Guinness Premiership title. His success extended to the international stage, where he represented England, Great Britain, and the British Lions, playing in three World Cups, scoring England’s only try in the 2003 Rugby World Cup, and earning five caps for the Lions. Jason’s England career saw him score 28 tries in 51 caps, including serving as the team captain in 2004.
Now a leading keynote speaker, Jason is recognised as one of the world’s top social mobility speakers. Growing up in a challenging environment in Leeds, where he witnessed domestic abuse and became the first in his family to secure a job at 16, Jason’s story is one of overcoming immense adversity. Despite the odds, he forged a successful career in a field dominated by those with private education, having been talent-spotted while training in hand-me-down clothes from his older sister. Jason’s journey was further complicated by his identity struggles, being the only Black member of his family and not meeting his father until the age of 36. Despite his professional success, he faced deep personal struggles, including suicidal thoughts, which have driven him to become a vocal advocate for mental health, racism, abuse, diversity, and inclusion. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Lycamobile British Ethnic Diversity Sports Awards.
Today, through JR Talks, Jason shares his powerful story, helping others build mental resilience and overcome adversity. As the author of Finding My Feet, he inspires audiences not only with his achievements on the rugby field but also with his personal journey of resilience. A passionate advocate for social mobility, racial equality, diversity, and inclusion, Jason emphasises the importance of equality, regardless of background or circumstances. If you seek an inspiring speaker on these critical issues, Jason Robinson is an exceptional choice.
It was such a good evening, Jason was amazing and we have had some really good feedback form people who attended. Jason arrived early so we were able to get to know him a little more ahead of the event and he kindly posed for photos with us.
