Matthew is a former elite MI6 intelligence officer and expert in providing creative leadership to inspire people to perform the extraordinary.

Matthew Dunn spent many years covertly operating as a spy in hostile locations around the world, enacting absurdly complex and highly dangerous operations and recruiting foreign nationals to do the same.
After retiring from service, he spent the last decade achieving international acclaim as a bestselling author of 14 spy novels and producing expert commentary on security and intelligence issues for global media networks and remains a trusted and incisive interviewee for major networks.

In the shadows, Matthew has carved a renowned and unique niche wherein he applies his groundbreaking MI6 methodology to inspire and guide individuals and groups to creatively achieve the seemingly impossible.

Matthew underwent extensive training in all aspects of field officer espionage before being appointed to an operational team. Matthew was an “A-Z” spy, meaning he had to have the ability to operate with zero support and back-up.

Alongside direct action, a key component of what he did was the recruitment and running of “agents” – foreign individuals with access to secrets. Such individuals were priceless to him and the bond shared was closer than that of a typical family.

Matthew was tasked against ‘Category 1’ challenges – nuclear annihilation, conventional wars, espionage, and state-sponsored terrorism and assassinations. Within the course of his work Matthew came face-to-face with the best of humankind, and the very worst. If he’d have been caught and his real role identified, he’d have faced life imprisonment or execution.

Regular topics Matthew speaks on include motivation of workplace culture, protecting businesses/agencies from hostile human attack, leading by example, the role of human intelligence in today’s complex and technology-driven world, and broader security and intelligence commentary.

Featured topics include

Born out of his experience of excruciatingly complex, unpredictable, and absurdly dangerous work, Matthew believes that the very best leaders are not only those who walk the walk; he also explains why leaders must share common purpose with those they spearhead. And the very best purpose is one driven by a dislike of the here and now and a desire for something better.
Matthew contends that leaders – and the individuals they want to lead – are adventurers who get bored with convention, dislike authority and regimes, and love changing landscapes. And they’ll carve their terrains in creative ways. Like Matthew, they are rebels with a cause of their own making.
Based on his intense field experience at the treacherous coal face of the secret world, Matthew explains why “collaboration” rather than “teamwork” is the very best way to optimise the performance of a group of individuals who share an objective. There should be no attempts to dilute, regiment, and in turn subjugate the ego of the individual. And nor should the individual capitulate to any such attempts. Instead, the power of the individual should be embraced.
Though details are sanitised for security reasons, Matthew provides visceral real-life examples of collaborative operations when he was a spy. Involved were men, women, young, old, most with different nationalities and outlooks. None of them particularly liked each other. And yet objectives were achieved with magnificent aplomb.
Casting doubt on notions such as ‘sacrifice’, ‘duty’ and ‘team’, Matthew addresses how collaborations can circumvent or absorb boredom, weakness, fear, and destructive agendas. He explains why the right team member is always an individual and never a “team member”.
Matthew gives unprecedented and proprietary access to the hitherto secret mindset of an MI6 spy. And it’s a mindset that can be owned by all. Despite its rigorous and groundbreaking training, MI6 doesn’t “mould” its recruits into well-adjusted high-achievers. Instead, it picks people who are already that person. And then it gives them the tools and permission to fly. Ergo, the weather-proof mental health and fitness of the MI6 spy is a virtue that be accessed by individuals of all walks of life and with differing aspirations.
Matthew shares the secret in a powerful address that’s peppered with remarkable anecdotes, yet always emphasises the grounded importance of the human being. ’Control’, ‘good habits’, ‘humour’, and even ‘philosophy’ are some of the elements he discusses to underpin his belief that each individual is and should be the centre of the universe.
