Before retiring from international rugby in 2014, Maggie Alphonsi earned 74 caps for England, scoring 28 tries and playing a key role in securing a record-breaking seven consecutive Six Nations titles.
She was an integral part of the team that won the 2014 Rugby World Cup—their first in 20 years—and helped secure the BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year award that same year.
Maggie’s success on the pitch made her a household name, but she has also forged a thriving career in the media. Since retiring, she has worked as a rugby commentator for Sky Sports, BT Sport, and the BBC. In 2015, she made history as the first former female player to commentate on men’s international rugby, joining ITV’s coverage of the Rugby World Cup. She continues to be a key part of ITV Sport’s rugby coverage today.
Beyond broadcasting, Maggie is also a trailblazer in sports journalism, becoming the first former female player to write a column for a national newspaper. Her insights and analysis regularly feature in The Telegraph.
In 2016, she broke new ground again by becoming the first England Women’s player elected as a National Member of the Rugby Football Union’s Council. As one of just six women on the 56-member council, she plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the game, particularly in leading the Diversity & Inclusion Steering Group.
Originally from South East London, Maggie has always valued education as highly as sport. She holds an MSc in Sports & Exercise from Roehampton University, a BSc in the same field from De Montfort University, and a BTEC National Diploma in Leisure Studies from Hertford Regional College. In recognition of her achievements, she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Arts from the University of Bedfordshire.
As a speaker, Maggie is both engaging and inspiring. Her journey through a male-dominated sport is a testament to resilience and determination—making her an ideal speaker for audiences far beyond the world of rugby.
