Dame Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock is an award-winning space scientist, broadcaster and one of the UK’s most influential science communicators.

Best known as a presenter of the BBC’s acclaimed astronomy programme The Sky at Night, Maggie has dedicated her career to making science accessible, engaging and inspiring for audiences of all ages.

Diagnosed with dyslexia as a child and attending 13 different schools, Maggie overcame significant challenges to pursue her dream of working in space science. Inspired by the achievements of Neil Armstrong and the moon landings, she developed a passion for exploration and discovery that would shape her future. She credits her love of science with helping her break through social mobility barriers and achieve ambitions that once seemed out of reach.

After studying Physics at Imperial College London and completing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Maggie built a distinguished career developing pioneering scientific instrumentation, including work on the James Webb Space Telescope and satellite systems designed to improve our understanding of climate change. Alongside her scientific work, she has become a familiar face on television through programmes including “Do We Really Need the Moon?”, “Do We Really Need Satellites?”, The One Show and I Literally Just Told You.

A bestselling author, passionate advocate for science education and champion for women in science and engineering, Maggie has inspired more than half a million people worldwide through her talks and public engagement work. Her enthusiasm for learning is infectious, and she is renowned for engaging audiences with thought-provoking insights on innovation, resilience, curiosity and the power of education. In recognition of her outstanding contribution to science and science education, Maggie was awarded an MBE in 2009 and was appointed a Dame Commander of the British Empire in the 2024 New Year Honours.
