Originally from a small town in County Down, Northern Ireland, Liz McConaghy began her journey with the Royal Air Force on her 19th birthday when she attended RAF Cranwell.

Liz McConaghy embarked on an exciting career flying Chinook helicopters and quickly made her mark as the youngest aircrew member to deploy to Iraq at just 21. For four years, she was the only female crew member on the Chinook wing, making her story particularly unique.

Throughout her career, Liz completed two deployments to Iraq and ten to Helmand, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Herrick. These experiences provided her with a deeply personal and insightful perspective on war.

After leaving the RAF in 2019, Liz faced a series of traumatic events that led to a severe mental health crisis, culminating in a suicide attempt in August 2020. Following this, she entered the Veterans’ Mental Health care system, where she began writing a therapeutic autobiography to help process her experiences. Her book, Chinook Crew ‘Chick’, was released in September 2022 and became an Amazon bestseller within three weeks. The book offers an honest and humorous recounting of her “best of times and worst of times” and how her experiences flying on the Chinook shaped her as a person.

Now a sought-after motivational and inspirational speaker, Liz McConaghy shares her powerful stories of resilience and mental health challenges within the RAF. She emphasises the importance of teamwork and resilience, demonstrating how to turn adversity into a positive force, even in the darkest times.

As an ambassador for mental health and PTSD among veterans, Liz McConaghy serves as a reminder that PTSD does not have to define a person; it can simply be a chapter in their life story.

What people say

Liz’s presentation was fantastic. By sharing her journey coping through PTSD enabled our people to get a better understanding of the condition and most importantly, how to manage it. The audience was totally captivated on her every word.”

Ben, Deputy Chair, RAF Northolt Resilience Community

Liz’s speaking slot was excellent. I’ve been in the presence of what feels like half of the “SAS off the TV” squad, comedians and other more publicly visible characters and her session landed the hardest blows, in a good way. Liz had us in stitches of laughter and her sense of humour (I guess partly from spending so long in a largely male environment) absolutely hit the mark, and that was quite often followed up very rapidly with welling up and holding back the sniffles when she opened up about some of her life events.”
