Hywel Roberts is a travelling teacher, writer, humourist, speaker, storyteller an experienced teacher in Special, Primary & Secondary settings.

Hywel Roberts’ reputation as an in-demand contributor to international conversations around leadership, learning, optimism, and hope, all wrapped up in a singular, easy to remember word: botheredness.

Originally a teacher, Hywel contributes to the national conversation around learning and thinking at all levels and is a very highly regarded teller of stories and a raconteur. He is also a well- respected author and contributes regularly to a variety of publications.

Hywel is equally comfortable addressing hundreds of headteachers at national conferences as he is working with EAL children in their classrooms. A prominent voice in education, he brings extensive experience across Special, Primary, and Secondary education, both in the UK and internationally, and frequently contributes to key educational publications.

Hywel plays an active role in university education programmes across Sheffield, Leeds, Huddersfield, Liverpool, Durham, and Wolverhampton. His ongoing work with children keeps his insights fresh and relevant. He is renowned for his expertise in curriculum innovation, creative practice, engagement strategies, leadership, literacy, teacher development, and “Imagineering” – bringing artistry and creativity to teaching.

Beyond schools, Hywel is a regular at conferences, including The Sunday Telegraph Festival of Education, Northern Rocks, Practical Pedagogies in France, and The University of Belfast Thinking Conference. He’s an in-demand keynote speaker.

His award-winning book, Oops! Getting Children to Learn Accidentally, published by Crown House Publishing, has gained international acclaim and is featured on many university teacher training reading lists. His forthcoming books, released in 2017 and 2018, continue to showcase his innovative approach to teaching. A regular columnist for the Times Educational Supplement, Hywel is often described as “a world leader in enthusiasm.”

In a time when many advocate for strict discipline and ‘no excuses’ to manage challenging classrooms, Hywel demonstrates that creativity, humour, imagination, and what he calls ‘botheredness’ can be far more effective tools for engaging students in their own learning.

If you’re seeking ways to infuse creativity, imagination, and a sense of wonder into your lessons—engaging students of all backgrounds and abilities to work independently—and a captivating speaker for a conference keynote, INSET event, or classroom demonstration, Hywel is the perfect choice.

What people say

Inspirational! I usually have around 3 action points to go away with – I have 10 for this one! One of our school development areas is ‘casual inference’. This will certainly go a long way to addressing this. Mid-way through the session I ordered the book. Feeling chuffed to bits!

Hywel was brilliant – very engaging and informative. Fantastic, funny, engaging and useful. Hywel Roberts session – engaging children without handfuls of prepared resources – keeping it simple
