As a boy Giles loved swimming and joined his first swimming club at the age of seven, he very quickly had dreams of going to the Olympics. He even told his parents that he was going to win a gold medal.

Giles Long broke his arm aged 13 and was diagnosed with a bone tumour soon after. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery left him without the use of his right shoulder. A nightmare for a swimmer. His dreams of going to the Olympics were over.

With recovery came the resumption of swimming though with Olympic dreams long left behind until he was introduced to the British Paralympic team. All of a sudden the passion for gold was reignited. He began rebuilding a high performing team around him and began his journey to gold once again.

On the way Giles learned how to get the most from those around him (by experiencing what happened when he didn’t engage them!) and the importance  of continual improvement through change.
