Ben Hunt-Davis is best known as part of the Team GB men’s eight rowing crew that won Olympic Gold at the Sydney 2000 Games.
Awarded an MBE in the 2001 New Year Honours, he has since built a reputation as a leading keynote speaker, performance coach, and facilitator, inspiring organisations with the lessons he learnt from elite sport.
As co-author of the best-selling book Will It Make The Boat Go Faster?, Ben shares the remarkable story behind his crew’s journey to Olympic success. He went on to co-found Will It Make The Boat Go Faster? Ltd in 2012, a business dedicated to improving performance and results for clients across sectors.
Over the past 16 years, Ben has designed and delivered leadership programmes, training courses, and conferences for organisations worldwide. His approach is highly practical, equipping people with tools and behaviours they can apply immediately to achieve meaningful results.
Alongside his work in business, Ben remains involved in the Olympic movement. He has been part of Team GB staff at the last three Summer Olympics and has chaired the organising committees of two major international rowing events in the UK, leading teams of up to 500 people.
Whether speaking on stage or working with leaders and teams, Ben draws on his Olympic journey to show how clarity, focus, and resilience can drive extraordinary success.
Ben tells the story of the last 24 months leading up to the Sydney Olympics and how the Great Britain Men’s Eights changed as a crew from being a regularly 7th placed boat to a winning one. The story is one of a group of individuals forged into a winning team by following a set of Performance Principles, habitually and consistently, in everything they did. Those Performance Principles were:
Ben’s speech will take 45 – 60 minutes and is tailored to fit with your key messages. It can be delivered both virtually and face to face.
Mutual Desire – Teams need clear goals – everyone must know what’s in it for them and how they will benefit from achieving the common goal.
Mutual Reliance – Very simply, when push comes to shove most people won’t really go out of their way, to support and help others in a team environment unless they really need to. Everyone needs to know how they and others contribute to the goal.
Measurability – You can’t manage what you don’t measure. Holding people to account and tracking progress towards the goal will keep you on track to achieve
Ben provided the perfect finishing touch for our conference. His enthusiasm was infectious and people left the room energised and excited. Even now, some weeks later, people are referencing the speech and the messages continue to positively impact our business.
It was so great – some comments from the team were ‘best ever speaker’ and ‘best offsite ever’. They really loved how engaging Ben was, one reference was that they felt Ben was talking straight down the camera at them which is great.
