As a boyย Gilesย loved swimming and joined his first swimming club at the age ofย seven, he very quickly had dreams of going to the Olympics. He even told hisย parents that he was going to win a gold medal.
Giles Long broke his arm aged 13 and was diagnosed with a bone tumour soon after. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery left him without the use of his right shoulder. A nightmare for a swimmer. His dreams of going to the Olympics wereย over.
With recovery came the resumption of swimming though with Olympic dreams long left behind until he was introduced to the British Paralympic team. All of a sudden the passion for gold was reignited. He began rebuilding a high performing team around him and began his journey to gold once again.
On the wayย Gilesย learned how to get the most from those around him (byย experiencing what happened when he didnโt engage them!) and the importance ย of continual improvement through change.
We started off with an audience of 200, by the time he finished it was twice that number. People were listening from the corridor! Giles was superb and really inspired us to embrace change.
Giles gave us just what we wanted, asked for and needed! Motivation, inspiration and sheer entertainment; he rounded off our day perfectly.
