Warren Larkin is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Visiting Professor at Sunderland University, and one of the UK’s leading voices on trauma, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), mental health, and prevention.
With more than 24 years of experience in the NHS, Warren has worked extensively with individuals and families experiencing serious mental health difficulties. His career began on long stay psychiatric wards before progressing to Clinical Psychologist roles specialising in psychosis, cognitive behavioural therapy, and family interventions. He later led one of the UK’s two national centres of excellence in psychological care for psychosis, helping to shape service innovation and contribute to national improvements in early intervention mental health care.
Warren has held senior leadership positions across children’s and family services, including serving as Network Clinical Director for Lancashire, where he was responsible for quality, safety, research, and innovation. His work has fuelled a lifelong passion for public health, prevention, and improving outcomes for future generations.
A recognised expert in trauma informed practice, Warren developed the REACh (Routine Enquiry About Adversity in Childhood) approach, which helps organisations become more trauma informed and equips professionals to have meaningful conversations about adversity in their everyday work. He has advised government departments, healthcare organisations, and international agencies, including UNICEF, and has played a key role in shaping national policy relating to children’s mental health, psychosis, trauma, and child sexual exploitation.
Warren has published extensively on adverse childhood experiences, trauma, and psychosis, and is the editor of a leading book exploring the links between childhood adversity and later life outcomes. He continues to work nationally and internationally to advance trauma informed approaches, resilience, prevention, and wellbeing.
As a speaker, Warren delivers thought provoking and evidence based presentations that help audiences understand the lifelong impact of adversity, the science of resilience, and the practical steps organisations can take to create healthier, more compassionate communities.
Warren has delivered Keynote presentations across the United Kingdom and internationally. He is a much sought-after presenter and delivers complex and challenging content in a warm and engaging manner. He has been spreading the word about trauma, adversity and the lasting impact on people’s lives for the last 25 years. In 2017, Warren presented to over 5000 people.

Many thanks to Warren for the series of ACES workshops he ran for the East Midlands Prevent Team. The sessions were engaging for staff and practically based. Warren worked hard to understand the context of the team’s work and shaped his inputs accordingly. Feedback from the team was universally positive with most reporting they felt more confident in identifying people who had experienced ACES and then engaging in professional conversations with them.
Warren provided training for safeguarding officers from our member Clubs within the English Football League. The training was impactful, helping delegates to understand adverse childhood experiences, what effect they can have on individuals throughout their lives. Warren’s knowledge in the subject and passion for his work was evident making the training informative and interactive for all. We look forward to working with Warren again in the future.
