biography

Luke began his journey with the 1991 London Marathon

and since that time has competed in over forty marathons, ultra-marathons and mountain races. With each race Luke searches out harsher conditions and pushes himself to new limits. He has learned to review and analyse each race, focusing on the key areas of strategy, tactics, equipment, nutrition and psychology. His reward for such attention to detail is that the next time around he knows he will be better able to race competitively against the worlds best.

He writes extensively about running for http://www.eventrate.com, the leading ultra-distance running website, and often contributes to Runners’ World magazine. He has also made numerous television appearances on NOW Sport, BBC Radio 5 Live and LBC. When not racing, Luke runs an executive coaching practice based in central London.

The Amazon Jungle Marathon…175 km…35°c…90% humidity September 2003 saw Luke competing in the inaugural Jungle Marathon, set in one of the most challenging environments. Carrying all his gear and fighting a constant battle to remain focused despite oppressive heat and humidity levels. Luke waded through swamps and rivers to complete this most demanding of races.

The Sahara Desert … 33km on foot…114hrs…non stop Following his success in the infamous Marathon des Sables desert race, Luke first attempted the Trans 333 in the year 2000, but was to bitter disappointment when he had to retire from the race after collapsing from dehydration. Determined to try again, Luke reviewed his training, nutrition and sleep deprivation strategies and his psychological approach returning to Mauritania a year later to settle the score and this time he succeeded.

The Himalaya…5 day…100miles…running at 12000 ft above sea level. Set to the awesome backdrop on Northern India’s Darjeeling region, the Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race of 1999 saw Luke racing up and down the treacherous Sherpa tracks overlooked by Mount Kangchangjunga, the fifth highest mountain in the world.

Luke recognises that through the application of a sound strategy, good planning and a determined approach we are all able to achieve success. By his own admission, he is no natural athlete; but he has learned to compete at the highest level in some of the most gruelling competitions our planet has to offer. Luke’s mission is to help people believe in themselves so that they can step outside their comfort zone and succeed.
