biography

Having been chosen as a volunteer by the BBC to spend the year 2000 marooned on the Outer Hebridean Island of Taransay as part of the great millennium experiment Castaway 2000, Ben returned to city life in London but has been indulging his countryside passions on-screen:- presenting Countryfile (for which Ben has been nominated for an RTS Award) and Animal Park ( 6th series) for the BBC.

2006 was especially challenging for Ben. Hell and Highwater was shown on BBC in February, documenting Ben’s row across the Atlantic with gold medalist, James Cracknell. He has also started filming his own travel/adventure show for BBC called Extreme Dreams to be shown on BBC 2 in the Autumn 2006. Ben also enjoyed presenting Crufts live on BBC 2 this March, which enabled him to share his passion for dogs over the four day event.

Travel has always been a driving force:- before obtaining a degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies, Ben spent a year in Ecuador working for an orphanage and a year on the Mosquito Coast of Honduras and Nicaragua working on a turtle conservation project. Then came 4 years in the Royal Navy and, a further year of study at the University of Costa Rica, before settling down in London as picture editor for Conde Nasts’ Tatler magazine.

His travel writing & photographic passions culminated in the publication of his books The Teatime Islands:- Ben visits islands such as Pitcairn and Tristan Da Cunha investigating the last outposts of the British Empire and Offshore (to be launched in May 2006).
