Michael Rimmer Inspires Pupils at Broomwood Primary School

• Foundation set-up by entrepreneur Barrie Wells grants first visits from elite athletes
• Sporting ambassador Michael Rimmer, an Olympic hopeful, visited local school Broomwood Primary on 17th May

The Wells Sports Foundation, a sporting charity set up by entrepreneur Barrie Wells to help support sports at grassroots level granted Broomwood Primary School in Altrincham a visit from top athlete Michael Rimmer, a semi-finalist at the Beijing Olympics, through its Sporting Ambassador scheme.

Michael visited the school on 17th May to spend the day with the children with the aim of motivating and inspiring them to increase participation in physical activity. Michael took part in a variety of activities including giving a short talk at the school assembly, spending time in the classroom and taking part in the Key Stage 2 800m Fun Run event.

Michael commented: “Being given the opportunity to take part in sports at schools is so important for young people, and I think it’s essential that everyone feels motivated to get involved.  Many of our most successful athletes first realised they had potential because of trying out their sport in a PE lesson, so it’s great to see schools like Broomwood doing all they can to encourage kids to get involved.  I am so pleased to be visiting the pupils at Broomwood on the 17th, as I can’t wait to get more people fired up about being active and enjoying physical activity at all levels.”

The Wells Sports Foundation has been set up by Barrie Wells to encourage greater participation of young people in sports.  The Foundation can offer support in two ways. Sports clubs can apply for a grant of between £500 and £2,000 and schools and various community organisations can apply for a visit from one of the 14 world class athletes Barrie Wells is privately funding to aid their 2012 Olympic potential, who will visit worthwhile grassroots sports events to promote the many benefits of physical activity and to help young people to realise their sporting potential.

Barrie Wells adds; “It is great that local schools such as Broomwood Primary are conducting events to motivate more young people to get involved in sport. The Ambassadors scheme accepts applications from a variety of organisations whose main aim is to get more young people playing sport at all levels. Due to the high demand of this unique scheme, we are particularly attracted to organisations that will go that extra mile to make the most of such a great opportunity.”
